Between the rays of the cross are silver swords with polished blades. In the centre of the cross is a circular silver oxidized medallion with raised polished borders, on which is a silver six-stage bastion with a raised silver fortified rampart. On the horizontal rays of the cross is the inscription «ПОРТЬ АРТУРЪ» in raised silver lettering. History: The Cross was instituted in 1914 and awarded to participants in the defence of Port Arthur in 1904-1905. The cross for officers was in silver with an enamel medallion showing a warship, that for other ranks in brass. Russia had established a naval base at Port Arthur on the Manchurian coast in 1897. The Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905 began on 8 February 1904 with a surprise Japanese attack on the Russian fleet (how History repeats itself!). This hand-written album of poetry belonged to a Russian officer,  whose military division was located in the city of Harbin, which can be seen by the notes. Many forgotten Russian songs and romances are written in this album. The album belongs to the times of the Russian-Japanese war. The city of Harbin is located in Manchuria, which currently belongs to China.  After the Russian-Chinese war a part of Manchuria went under the Russian rule,  and Russia promised to return it back to China in 1903. Harbin included a settlement of Russians. The railways that go through the railway station in Harbin lead to Vladivostok and Port-Arthur.  During the Russian-Japanese war, many Russian troops were situated in Harbin and Port-Arthur.
